Question:

What is it about the color red that bleeds so easily in the wash, and the color black that fades so easily?

I am not one who likes her blacks to fade to darkest gray ( or maybe it's off black). I am hoping to find some black clothing dye to make my blacks black again.

I have this one black top, only a couple months old, and washed it for the first time, and it already faded some.

Thanks to all who have the answer to the question. :-)

  1. There is always extra dye in those colors to get the right hue...I have always soaked my blacks(only) and reds(only) serparately in vinegar..either white vinegar or apple cider vinegar before washing them..Wash in cold water...The blacks should keep their color longer and so should the reds...Good Luck

  2. It's all in the dye. Certain colors are hard to make vivid without extra dye. Vinegar does help, like already mentioned. I use it in the washer instead of fabric softener and that helps a ton.

You can also soak it in vinegar before wearing and washing for the first time, but that can have different reactions with different types of dye. It may actually pull out extra color! If one shirt seems to fade/bleed a lot then you can try it.

I once read a tip, haven't tried it yet, that says to put coffee in your washer to wash black without fading! I can't remember the exact procedure or amount, but perhaps you could search it online and find out.

  3. Like Balck,Red,is just a very unstable pigment.....I would suggest you Soak the  garments in vinegar and salt, that will set dyes and stop colors from bleeding...Before you do your washings....I hope this helped you out.....: )

  4. Stop it your hurting my head,,,,I Dont no!!    lol
