A passport file contains your passport application and the paperwork to back up your identity along with your picture. It does not contain where you have been. If you asked the passport authority where I have been I will guaranty that they will not have the slightest idea. It usually contains a copy of your birth certificate and your SSN. When you leave this country you apply to the country you are visiting for a visa not the US. The only thing damaging is probably McCain's birth certificate(he is a naturalized citizen making him ineligible to run for president but we already knew that).

Outside of the places a person traveled in his or her lifetime, the personal data, social security number, and other identity information would make identity theft a slam dunk.

If you really want to get to know someone, get ahold of their passport.

Its not that important unless you don't want people to know where you've been.

Unless you are talking about using the information for purposes of fraud, its not information that's unavailable in other forms.

But if, like with Bill, you want to see if hes been talking to the Communists, as many back then implied, due to a teen age class trip, then you can take the info that he was in Russia and twist it to mean something sinister.

What is important is that its supposed to be off limits, as a privacy issue, and the darn things are guarded less carefully than the last strawberry yogurt in the fridge.

It has basic application info- name, date of birth, social security number and contact info.  

It's important because people shouldn't be poking into those things without a reason.  If you're a celebrity (like McCain, Clinton or Obama), you might be a weeee bit more sensitive if someone snoops into your files because paparazzi invade your privacy enough without government contractors doing it, too. It's not critical, it's just annoying.  

After all, how would you feel if a stranger peeked at *your* personal info? Well, that's how they felt, too. The only difference is, you probably wouldn't get a personal apology from SecState Rice.
