slander.  can you prove where this rumor originated from?   Hard to win but you can have it stopped and put some pressure on for it not to happen again.

Slander if it's verbal.  Libel if it's in print.  Defamation of Character in any case.

Good luck pursuing legal action though.  Unless it's in print, you have little hope.  And even then, you usually have to prove it's wrong, that it caused you tangible damages, and that the person who did it had reason to know it to be false at the time.  Depending on jurisdiction, of course.
