What is it called? The luggage tank for vans?

I was wondering "what is the thing on top a van that looks like a tank is?" And how much do they cost?

I always thought these things looked like photon torpedoes from Star Trek.  You can call them "cargo carriers and boxes" according to Thule who is the premier manufacturer of these types of things.  Or "car rooftop carriers" according to website http://spockboxes.com (maybe they are from Star Trek as Spock was "buried" in a photon torpedo!).  Prices range from  under $100 for a cargo bag to almost $500 for a top of the line one.  Plenty of images at the links below.
