It's called a "scam", also known as a "con", or a "ruse".

90% of "secret shopper" opportunites are scams. I sincerely warn you not to sign up with any secret shopper network you may have seen online. They will ask for a small one-time "fully refundable" fee of $30-50, and you'll never see a dime of it back, and never get contacts from stores. Why? Because stores already HAVE the information they need, and already HAVE employees that do that specific job.

Then you'll find out that the only way to get that refund you were promised is if you signed up with 50 individual companies as a secret shopper (each of which requiring an application and a small essay). Time consuming and terribly boring grunge work just to get your money back.

Believe me, it's not worth it. I fell for it, and didn't get a dime back.
