Like, Alaska is next to Canada but part of the U.S. and Hawaii is across the ocean. What's the word for that?

  1. I don't think that kind of separation has a name.  What about the state of Michigan?  The Upper Peninsula is hooked to Wisconsin but separated from "mainland" Michigan.

Edit.  The American Heritage® Dictionary calls Alaska and Hawaii "isolates".  Isolates are states that have been isolated, as by geographic barriers.

  2. Non-contiguous.

  3. Yes, it is call non-contiguous. Alaska isn't "non-continental" because it is part of the North American continent, like 48 other states.

  4. well if it IS attatched it is called "continental united states".

"Outside continental united states" is prefered over "non-continental united states"

    hope this helps :)
