A family member of mine just got a 2008 nissan altima as a rental car while her highlander is being repaired. The nissan has the option of driving in automatic or manual. What is this called?

  1. Its called tiptronic and it is an automatic transmission that can be shifted manually.  It does not have a clutch so it is not a manual transmission.  Its really not a new thing, we've been using manually shifted automatics in drag racing for as long as I can remember.

There are now electronics available to convert your manual transmission to a paddle shift (full manual transmission).  One of my friends converted his car to this system and it will shift gears in milliseconds.

Paddle shifted manual transmissions are available on high end exotics such as Ferrari's

  2. Semi-automatic.

You have different types of semi-auto transmission that work differently.

  3. tiptronic.

    vauxhall/opel call it ActiveSelect, Easytronic

  4. PURE HEAVEN,,,HA!!HA!!!         BACK IN THE DAY IT WAS CALLED ,HIS & HERS SHIFTER,BUT TO GEAR HEADS IT IS KNOWN AS A DUAL GATE SHIFTER

  5. tiptronic

  6. tiptronic (not triptronic).

  7. triptronics is correct...
