Close your eyes and approach a wall as close as you can without bumping into it. You can feel the wall's presence and can get within inches and know how close you are before you open your eyes. It's not echo location because you're not making a sound.

  1. According to the movie "Butterflies are free" it is called shadow vision. Remember, that was only a movie.

  2. This is a choice question. Along with sight, you have hearing, touch, smell, and memory. Without sight, you can still feel your body heat being reflected and gathering as you near the wall. You can even detect smell changes from the wall, and again maybe from your body gathering as you near the wall.

Something like this is when you are in a room for a while reading, with various background noises. Then someone, even silently, walks in. You will be able to detect this without looking, because the acoustics of the room will change, and those background noises will change. We all use this ability. It's neat. Thanks for this question.
