  1. "Heath Robinson" is an adjective to describe a complicated contraption or machine to perform a single specific task.

    It originates from the name of the British cartoonist who 'designed' and published amusing drawings of these contraptions in the 1940's.

  2. Government in action.

  3. I salute the Rube Goldberg offerers. It is probably a better answer than our young asker realizes, but I recognize the modern syndrome of being kitted-up to the ears.  The sporting beginner who extravagantly  buys equipment that nobody but a pro could take advantage of. The latest this and the latest that - all for show.  What would I call it?  Ostentatious, phoney, trendy, and being a poseur.

  4. overcompensation

  5. working like my hubby.... or Rube Goldberg design

  6. superfluousness - exceeding what is sufficient or necessary;

    You are being superfluous.

  7. It's called a Rube Goldberg.
