What is it like being a freelance journalist?

It can be tough. The problems include a lack of a regular paycheck, no health insurance unless you pay for itself, and no regular schedule. Hard to turn down an assignment unless you are doing well. You've got to be really good to make it work.

I've done plenty of outside work over the years, but it usually been in my spare time. Everyone would like to go write on their own choices of interesting subjects, but usually that's not realistic.
