Question:

What is it like in Darwin, Australia?

I understand that the weather is quite humid, but aside from that, what is the crime rate like? Similar to cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne? Or higher? Lower? What is the housing market like? Is it affordable? Also, what is the average age of the people living there? Is there a large group of young professionals (~ 25 - 35 years old)?

Any other information about Darwin, Australia would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Darwin is an over rated tourist place. The whole town touristy stuff revolves around 'the war', by that I mean 1939-45 . You would think Darwin was the only place involved in 'the war'.I found the people to be not very friendly, food is expensive, and the sand flies WOW they eat you alive. You can see people going around in shorts etc with great scabs all over their skin where these pesky critters have had lunch!Hot, stinking, humid yes. If you are good at holding your beer, then do go there, they love beer drinkers!!  I did not find the Aboriginals a problem, my favourite Northern Territory place was Katherine. Theres plenty of Abos there too, but EVERYONE is friendly, - nice place to be.

  3. Hey, I moved from America to Darwin in January 2008, im originally from Melbourne.

If you like really hot weather, like REALLY HOT lol you should come here, me and my mum are having dificulties living here and just adjusting to everything. There is only 1 shopping center and that is in Casuarina, like half an hour away from Palmerston and about 40 minutes from Darwin. The crime rate over here i am not sure what it is, but there really isn't alot of crimes. And another reason you DONT want to live in darwin is... all the ABORIGINALS i mean im not being mean, but you walk out of something and they wil hasle you for money, and they stink really really bad no joke, and they live out on the streets and live in the bushes, but i swear they are everywhere!!!!!! Me and my mum and brother are thinking about moving back to melbourne, besides that is were all our family is. And if you have kids, *not sure how old you are* kids at these schools, tend to pick on the new ones, because were new and they dont want to give in there time to chat with us and get to know us, they instead bully us. I have been going to  school for 4 months and have only 1 friend, my brother on the other hand has a few friends, but is getting bullyied by these kids, and the teachers dont do anything about it, same with the principal.

There really isnt an average age for darwin, as there is just soo many different ages of people, but alot of then tend to be around 18 and under, just because there is so many children.

well i hope this helped...not sure if it did lol.

    goodluck

  4. i've lived here for over 4 yrs and love it. I love the seasons, especially the wet. There is always something going on up here, lots of things to do all the time. The people are great n friendly, the life style up here is unique up here.

There is a large group young professional  working  up here, the crime is no where as bad as anywhere else in aus, yes every now n then you may hear something but its not very often, i live rural, half hour from the city, we don't have any problems where we are, but like all suburbs further in you have muggings, and break ins but what state doesn't?, it just pays to live a little further out where u don't have tha problem.

As for houses, not as dear as sum of the other states but its getting there unfortunalty. Rent is very high though.

The night life is good, plenty of places to go n party if thats your thing. Lots of places to go and heaps of things to see.

The change from dry to wet season and back again is unreal.

Lots of unique critters and wildlife up here, you can swim all year round! Every day is a good day for fishing and a bbq.

    Hope that helped.
