I am thinking of moving to Vancouver Island from Alberta. A point of view from a Comox or Courtney resident would be great!

  1. I can't imagine why you'd regret it. I'm 15 miles out of Courtenay. It's great here. Lots of ex-Albertans for some reason, and that's been true for a long time. Comox and Courtenay have just about everything you need, scenery's good and varied, weather about as good as it gets in coastal BC, there's lots of farmers' markets and lots of cultural stuff here. People are friendly. Real estate prices are still reasonable. Large variety of outdoor stuff to do too. It's the best place I've lived.

If you're dying for big city things, Vancouver's not that far away and there are direct flights to Calgary. I met a woman last year, though, who said she has friends who have flown from Calgary just to shop in downtown Courtenay. It's small but there are two blocks of very good shopping.

  3. We moved to Courtenay almost two years ago and wish we had done it sooner.  Very laid back yet we have most of the convenience of a large city such as shopping and restaurants etc. but without the traffic problems of Vancouver.  The crime rate is fairly low but we do have a homeless problem as most cities do now.  As for recreation we have skiing and mountainbiking at Mt. Washington, boating and fishing almost anywhere, river rafting and lake swimming.  Hiking, mountain climbing, biking.  Everything a person could wish for.
