I am thinking of applying to university and doing a Bachelor of Education course with Qualified Teacher Status. After doing this course how hard is it to get a job as a Primary School teacher and what is the job like?

Thanks in advance!

  1. It can be a lot of work and intense especially at the beginning and end of the school year.

But it is a fun job and that is why I have stayed with it so long.

I've worked in corporate jobs and I would never go back in a million years. Compared to sitting in an office all day and going to boring meetings -- working with kids is FUN.

Huge bonus -- all the time off. In my district we get two months off every summer, plus a week at Thanksgiving, two weeks at Christmas, a week at spring break, plus multiple three-day weekends and approximately eight sick/personal days to use throughout the year.

In the beginning as a teacher you will work very hard and take a lot of work home. But after the first year or two you get more organized and get your routines down. I rarely take work home now and I love scooting out the door and going home at 3 p.m. every day while all the corporate worker bees are still in their offices.

Job availability depends a LOT on where you live in the U.S. Check out the teachers.net chatboards -- they have chatboards for each state of the U.S. and you can find out where the jobs are available.

Here is the link, scroll down and look for your state under the "Regional Teachers" mini headline:

If you are considering going for a teaching degree I strongly STRONGLY suggest you get some kind of subbing or teaching assistant experience first. Only until you get into the classroom will you truly get an idea of whether this is a job you are cut out for.

    Good luck!
