What is it like to farm on Upton soil?

I have to write an essay about this soil series (3000 words). So please tell me all you know, problems, advantages, everything! :) help...please

  1. If you go to your local university or ag office they will have coppies of the gavernement soil survey this will tell you lots of infrmation about how good the soil is to farm. Eg. land class, texture, stoniness, slope etc.


  2. Any farming over a limestone bedrock whether the bedrock has partially changed to gluey or not, will have problems associated with inability of plants to extract nutrients because of the high pH.

    Very well drained gravelly soils like Upton, may be in a bowl that holds a bit of water above the limestone, but in general you would need to receive a steady supply of rain to do anything close to farming. other than growing trees.

    The possible exception of deciduous trees is a result of trees being able to put roots down through cracks in the limestone to a deeper source of water. I would expect even conifers would die of even mild drought.
