What is it like to hear with both ears?

when i was about 5 years old, i got meningitis. i don't remember much of the whole incident, all i can truly know of it is that it left me completely deaf in my right ear. this usually doesn't effect me, except when trying to listen to some of my favorite music through headphones. & most people don't even notice that i am partly deaf until after i tell them. but last night it really came to focus, when i was laying in the bathtub my head mostly submerged, i could hear the water going down the drain with only my left ear.

what i'm trying to get at with this all, is i'm just curious to know how one would best describe the natural ability to hear out of both ears...

  1. omg thats really sad. to hear with your both ears is just not blancing on just the left ear u can here on the other side too. so its like a balance nd with one ear its only the side u can hear on that you can hear like music. i guess lol.

  2. it is hard to describe when ive been like that my entire life. hearing with both ears is like having sound on both sides of my head. it is surrounding as to where i suppose that is the opposite for u.

  3. you can hear everything, but that's not always a good thing.  so your deaf in one ear, at least your not deaf in both.

  4. maybe the easiest thing to say is that it like stereo to mono. with two inputs there becomes a sense of dimension on a third plane, there is right and left and a relationship between them. maybe if you tried blocking one of your eyes and looking with the other, you can get a visual equivalent, sure you can see ok, but maybe the depth perception is a little off.
