I am thinking of moving to freshwater Isle of Wight and I don't really know the area as I am from London. What is the place like for public transport, Schools and is there a free school bus for high school. And what is the job situation like there, well everything really. So if anyone can fill me in I would be grateful. Many Thanks.

  1. I live on the IOW. Although opposite side of the Island and don't know Freshwater what so ever. Only ever been through it if I have to catch the ferry to the mainland!

As far as I'm aware it's not the best place on the Island. The most popular tend to be Newport, Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin and Cowes.

School education isn't the best. The results tend to be lower than most of the mainland and Freshwater isn't the best place for school. The nearest high school is Carisbrooke I think which is in the centre of the Island (10 miles away?) which means buses are necessary.

The trainline only operates over the other side of the Island (Ryde/Sandown/Shanklin).

I never had to get the bus to school but there is a student rider card which gives student anywhere on the Island for £1 on the bus (or train).

Job opportunities are not good either. Very limited. If you're a student then there are a few part time jobs like hotel/shop/restaraunt work.

    All sounds very bad!

On the plus side however the weather tends to be better than the rest of the country, far less crime, much quieter, cleaner, safer, superb beaches, slow pace of life, very friendly people, not really as expensive compared to the rest of the south and decent pubs!

Hope I ain't put you off but that's about my opinion of it. In summary I do like living here despite all the bad things. Much more relaxing than the mainland
