  1. It is extremely challenging and exhausting work.  You must make rapid decisions based on little information, the results of which have a dramatic effect on other people's lives.  In addition, most offices are understaffed, which adds to the stress.  Also, everywhere you go, if people know you work in the Consular Section, they will hound you for favors which would be entirely unethical for you to grant.  Few people choose consular work for their entire Foreign Service career.


  2. US consuls screen many applicants for the US visa as students, tourists and immigrants.  You have to deal with a lot of people trying to convince you that they have legal documents so that they visas will be approved.
