I live in Hawaii and I am considering a job in a big corporation on the mainland. Well for those of you who don’t know, working in Hawaii is in a very laid-back atmosphere. So my question is, how does it feel to work in a big corporation on the mainland? Do you actually work every minute? Can you check personal emails and other stuff like that? Is the communication between employees very official? Are they open to telecommuting?

  1. To answer your questions:

I think it's similar to any other work, with a few exceptions.

Yes, you work a lot, but there are usually periods of "down time" when you need to take the initiative if you want to be successful.

Personal e-mail websites are usually blocked.

Communication between employees is generally professional and can be somewhat binding when in writing (if you promise something to someone, they'll expect you to deliver)

Telecommuting is being offered more than before, but not by all organizations.
