What is it like to work on a cruise line& what standards/personal record/previous employment must an employee?

Most cruise lines require several years (5 min) experience in a high end customer service field.  If you are wanting to be a waiter, this would need to be waiting/customer service experience.

Each cruise line has Careers link on their website that shows you how to submit application.  Many have moved to electronic only formats instead of receiving paperwork.  It also helps to be fluent in more than one language.  They really need multilingual employees as the ships are international.

Cruise lines are very difficult.  The majority of their staff is foreign due to the fact that most Americans won't work those conditions.  Employees work very long days.  Room and board is provided but the cabins are quite smaller than the cabins for passengers.   Many cruiselines do roughly a 9 month schedule.  However you do get some time off to enjoy the island.  Of course your position really affects your time off/long work day.  Waiters probably have it the worst and entertainment has it the best.  It seems the average, you would be on ship for 9 month before your "tour" is over.

Check out the individual websites.  They have different interview processes.  Some (like airlines) travel and could set up a time in your city (or a nearby big city) to interview.  Some larger cruiselines you'd have to fly to interview.

If you are really serious, I would put a cover letter and resume together and send it to all the cruise lines, ATTN: Human Resources. All the cruise line websites have contact info, email addresses, etc.

One bartender I talked to on a cruise told me he answered an ad in his local paper in India. They called him in for an interview and he was hired. He did have lots of experience though working in 5 Star hotels in Dubai before his cruise career. Some service industry experience would be helpful to get a position, along with references.
