  1. the stations, and the djs, all sound the same, play the same terrible songs, say the same sh*t.  it's just so boring.

  2. commercials and dj's that sound like they eat helium with their corn flakes....

  3. The big operators wanted to be bigger. They solicited, begged and bullied their way to consolidation with the Telecommunications Act  of 1996 and were finally granted almost full rein over how many stations in however many markets they could grab up.

Now that the officers of those companies (which mostly went public) have made personal fortunes, they want to break it all down again and go private then sell all the poorer producing properties off.

Meanwhile the properties that were entrusted to them for the public good have been decimated of their value both in human and technical terms.

    Don't get me started.

    -a guy named duh

  4. Where should I begin???

  5. Hmm.  Where to start.  Corporatization of the field def. tops my list.  DJs cant even pick what they play or say anymore.

The monopolies of it in most major cities,  the cause of loss of variety even between different companies,

And finally, the freakin FCC.  They have PC'd the media into a little corner where everything we say or play gets so scrutinized it's just easier to be boring and redundant than risk facing huge fines because some oversensitive moron gets offended by a condom commercial.

  6. One of the better questions on here in a long time...

I think like Blue and Duh said, the deregulation after 1996 that built the conglomerate companies put a death nill into radio as we knew it. Most stations sound so much like each other it's easier for me to tell you which ones are locally owned or at least locally controlled for the content (as I know of a few stations outside the local area owned but the owners leave all decisions with the local managers)

But there is no real imagination in radio, same cookie cutter playlist that has gotten so bad, I can almost tell what song they will play next, commercials that go way overboard and air talent that you know is having to prep by reading the online newspaper to even know what's going on in the city he's being beamed into.

Everyone is saying how so much better XM and Sirius are.. well guess what? They are getting just as bad.... people like repetition and commercials on the merged Xm and sirius is what is supposed to help them dig out of the red hole they have both been in for 10 years now.... Don't beleive me.. ask other radio people... they are following the formula of cable tv which had almost no commercials in the late 1970s and now look.. only channels you pay to see by themselves such as HBO run no outside ads!!!!

So for someone who loves terrestrial radio, yeah I hate corporate run radio.. but I've heard some other operators do just as bad, but at least they do it cause they know no better and not because they are greedy and trying to cut corners
