  1. It means oatmeal in Russian

  2. filling..

  3. In many dictionaries, Kasha literally translates as porridge (including BabelFish):

That translation is wrong, however, becasue in some areas of Eastern Europe it refers to that particular type of dish, not neceseraly made of oats.

You can read about it here:

  4. KASHA

Kasha are dishes of Eastern European origin, usually made from crushed buckwheat (buckwheat groats). Kasha also is used to refer to the buckwheat groats themselves.

In Poland, kasha is a porridge or thick gruel, and in Russia it is frequently baked into small pancakes in the oven.

  5. kasha is a grain that is also called buckwheat groats.  it is the buckwheat kernel, cleaned.  It is very good.  I have used it in a meatless chili recipe and it has the mouth feel of ground meat and takes on flavors very well.  Check at your local health food store and they should have info and recipes on this.  I have also used it in combinations with rice to make a filling for vegetarian cabbage rolls.  It cooks quickly and so it can burn easy if not watched as it absorbs a lot of water.
