Back in the day before William I brought the Feudal rule, England was ruled by Petty Kings in a heptarchy.  Each of these kings ruled their own part of England:

Kent

Sussex

Wessex

Essex

East Anglia

Mercier

Northumbria

Now we know of several of these Petty Kings, Alfred the Great etc.  And more and more evidence is coming to light of a Petty King named Arthur.

Back then, in order to frighten would-be invaders, propagandists would create tales and legends of their kings.  It would seem that the legends of Arthur Pendragon, son of Uther Pendragon, may have stood the test of time a little too well.  The idea was that the king's exploits were supposed be come legends.  In this case, the king himself became a legend.

So much so that many of England's castles are rumoured to be the fabled castle of Camelot.

King Arthur is a mythical character. The debate as to who Arthur and the Arthurian legends are based on is still a matter of debate.

Commonly, Arthur is illegitimate son of the Uther Pendragon.  The term Pendragon means warrior chief. Arthur once King was known as Arthur Pendragon.

King Arthur was only known as "Arthur." Some suggest it is derived from the Latin family name Artorius, meaning "ploughman". Others propose a derivation from Welsh arth (earlier art), meaning "bear", suggesting art-ur, "bear-man", is the original form. Arthur's name appears as Arturus in early Latin Arthurian texts.

Historians can't decide whether anyone like Arthur ever existed, though most now accept that the legend is very loosely based on a real historical figure; he may have been a 5th or 6th century ruler name Arturus or Riothamus.
