Tennis is a very old sport.It started out as a ball game played on an indoor court.That version of the sport does still exist.It's now called real,or court tennis.

In the late 1800's in England,people started playing tennis outdoors on lawns.There were many flat lawns used for croquet,which were good for tennis as well.The invention of vulcanized rubber for balls also played a part.They could bounce up off the lawns.

They called the sport Lawn tennis to distinguish it from the old indoor sport.

Tennis was played overwhelmingly on grass lawns in it's early years.

In continental Europe they started playing on clay courts as well.

Tennis was called Lawn tennis for a long time.But as the sport became so much more popular than it's ancestor,it just became known as tennis.

So tennis is the sport you see played on many surfaces,including grass lawns at Wimbledon.
