Question:

What is left for gender equality?

It seems that the genders are pretty close in equal rights, what else is there to do to "level the playing field"? Feminism is supposed to be about equal rights for all, what rights do women not have that men have? I mean maybe 30 years ago or so women didn't have the rights, but I do not see where one gender as an advantage over another, except when it comes to scholarships and the legal system and such, and men don't have an advantage on those.

I guess my question is, is there room for feminism to gain equality in society, or is it just about gender supremacy these days?

  1. They are not close to equal rights at all. Women have more rights in divorce courts, more reproductive rights, face more lenient sentencing for crimes committed and don't have to fight in times of war. On top of this, women have an education system that bends over backwards to favour them. Women are also protected from negative stereotyping in the media, men have no protection at all.

  2. It would be nice if attitudes caught up to the rules, now.

Yes, in theory and in law, women are entitled to equal treatment. But there are still plenty of hurdles for women to jump... managers who assume SHE will be having babies and leaving, so why promote her... or that SHE must be at that time of the month where HE is being forceful or decisive, when each makes the same unpopular decision... etc.

Some go the other way... as a single mother, I got housing in 3 weeks and was heralded as a loving superhero for getting myself through college and into a job, while giving another woman a job as a caregiver. I knew a single father who was more than a year homeless (in a shelter) with HIS kid, and looked on as a deadbeat for giving up his job to stay home with the baby... a case where traditional roles worked in my favour, but I still see it as wrong. Regardless of our genders, we both were loving parents doing the best for our kids who came first. Why should he as the man be expected to do other than I? Because it was assumed as the woman I was weaker and had more to overcome, so I got housing, a student loan, and subsidised childcare while he was just labeled a bum?

    It is ugly both ways.

  3. The pay gap is one of the biggest myths of the last two decades:

  4. The goal of feminism is and always will be about pushing for more special perks for women.  If there are any gender inequality(at least in the West) men are the one that face them.

  5. Women are still not given equal pay for equal work that is still way off.

Men are certainly NOT given equal standing in family court I think women have a very unfair advantage and I think they exploit it (not all women mind you) and really makes me sick seeing a woman rake a man over the coals on child support and alimony.

So at this point we still have plenty of ground to cover for both genders.

  6. Feminism is not about gender supremacy.  There is still not the assurance of equal pay for equal work.  Men are still not quaranteed equal consideration in custody issues.  There are societal boundaries that still need to come down, as evidenced by your question and so many of the questions and replies here.

It is the anti-feminists that continue the myth that feminists want gender supremacy.

  7. hello from italy!!!!!!! you are fantastic! a big kiss, ciaooooooo jessi

  8. Valerie C: Your lying, plain and simple. If he could get away with paying you a lower wage, he'd pay EVERYBODY a lower wage, thereby increasing profit.

Maybe your not being entirely truthful about these "underqualified" men?

To answer the original question, there are still a few fences to break down for both genders. Women still deal with sexist attitudes moreso than men. Men are generally not thought of as an equally adept parent to women, and as such, we receive primary custody only about 15% of the time.

Women generally aren't hired for manual labor jobs over men. This may or may not be discrimination, considering a man would be more valuable in manual labor.

Remember, we may have equal rights on paper, but that doesn't mean people dont violate those rights with no consequences. This goes for women and men.

  9. jobs!!! MONEY !!! promotions!!! Congress!!! Governorships!

We want equal pay when we are hired! I NEVER get that and I only find out later when less qualified  men start talking about how little they make and I realize it is much MORE than I am making.

  10. The amazing issue that I find is that feminists do not recognize the blatant hypocrisy when it comes to any men's issues and just write it off as some farcical joke. Feminists have never gone to bat for anything that is blatantly against boys and men.

Nothing concerning the bad results boys have at school for example. Nothing about the blatant sexism demonstrated by the education department employing only female teachers (80% of teachers are women), but ignore that, it's a non-issue.

Nothing is mentioned about the fact that women receive up to 80% of all social security payments, ignore that as well.

Women are given preferential in the workplace by laws that guarantee women are employed over men.

It's pure sexism and feminists promote and encourage it.

There are no limits to their demands even when the pendulum has swung totally in women's favor.

Look at the health programs, where's the men's health department ?

What is being done about men's suicides standing at 80% overall. Where are the feminists on these issues, nowhere to be found..

No wonder feminists are being blamed for promoting women's supremacy, it's exactly what they are about.

  11. I would suggest that in the USA at least a woman can do whatever she likes with her life. She might have an obstacle here or there, but everyone has some.

If any woman has a problem with the way women are looked at in this society that woman should look at the women around her because chics still line up to live up to the stereo type in many different ways. Look at magazines for instance. Chics are the ones who buy them.
