  1. youll most likely get robbed. i hate tourists.....

  2. as a brazilian i wouldn't recomend Rio... there are better cities to live in Brasil, why don't you consider the south of Brasil? there are many beatiful cities there that have a much higher quality of life and better administration, also are less dangerous. Rio de Janeiro was a very beatiful place in the past, but, due to the incompetence of the local goverment, it is getting worse as times passes... although there are people that i know that still love that city and still thinks its beautiful, and i am not talking about patriotic brazilians, i am talking speacialyy about europeans, that reminds me that the beaches on the northeastern litoral of brasil are getting "invaded" (in a positive way) by tourists, specially europeans and unitedstadians, because they are like thousands of times better and more beautiful than the ol' copacabana beach and are more peaceful, its a hotter place than brazilian south, with summer all year long (like in Rio) and the sea is much cleaner, the beaches are much cleaner, just don't go to Salvador, i have heard its a disgusting city even though it's fame. but once again people have different opinions, im juast saying that rio de janeiro is not as beautiful and glamurous as it used to be, you could travell there for a while but i wouldn't recommend living there. go to the northeast, like in Recife and visit Fernando de Noronha. hope i helped^^

  4. You'll find that there will be tons of other expats in your age group doing the same thing. My thought is to really consider what it is you're looking for. If it's a bucolic tropical paradise then Rio is not the answer. It's a beautiful and very fun city but you'll have to deal with the crime, traffic and high prices. That said, if you have the funds and can chose to live in a safe neighborhood like Leblon, Ipanema or Barra da Tijuca; you'll find it to be a great city with all the modern conveniences you won't find in other beautiful, but much smaller, Brazilian cities. If you want a quieter lifestyle with a house on the beach, try the North of Brazil. Bear in mind that you will not have a major airport nearby (have to connect via Rio or Sao Paulo to get to Europe) or access to top hospitals/shopping. Either way, you'll love living in Brazil whether you choose Rio or not! Enjoy!

Word of advice, you HAVE to learn Portuguese. Your experience will be much less enjoyable if you do not. Also, Rio people are fun/carefree but a bit fickle. You will find that making deep connections to be more difficult.
