I am paying a certain company quite a bit of money to help with the above service for my website, but I am not convinced it isn't something I can't do myself. Please share your knowledge on the subject. Thanks

  1. Here's a free eBook on link building.

There is also a free link building exchange

here that you can join as well to increase

    your links.

  2. Theoretically, you CAN build links yourself.  But an SEO company will do it efficiently to drive the costs down... and their work will be effective -- without an SEO background it's easy to spin your wheels chasing link juice from "dead end" sources.

You must also be mindful of the risks with link building.  Getting into the wrong link "neighborhoods" is like hanging out on the wrong side of the tracks... the local sheriff (Google) casts a suspicious eye on you, and it won't be long before you slip up.

For most businesses, there's far too much riding on the company's image and web potential, to risk a home-brewed link building campaign.

  3. Here is a FREE place to Advertise Your Website - Business.

Plus they DON'T make you put a link to their site on your Website!

  4. Link Building is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results for targeted keywords. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS) or the higher it "ranks", the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of searches, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.

  5. Yes you can build links yourself.  Good reciprocal linking is the 2nd best option for generating traffic while improving your page rank.  Reciprocal link exchanges are what many of us have been doing (including me!). This is info I just learned yesterday. The reason you don’t do reciprocal link exchanges is because they are not as effective as links for individual pages.

    Here are some suggestions:

       1. Don’t buy or sell sitewide links for SERPS (search engine results page). You should buy them from individual pages.

       2. Don’t look for high PR links only, start your campaign for a new site with PR 0-1 and slowly move up each week as you see your rankings improve.

       3. Control link placement and speed. Remember “too many links at once” and Google will filter them.

       4. Control the number of outbound links on your pages and on pages where you place your links, avoid link-farms, links to gambling halls, pills, etc.

       5. A link from a relevant website is excellent, but a link from a quality site, other niche, or foreign language can boost your ranking as well, so don’t ignore those offers to link to them.

       6. Make your links look natural. Use different link anchors, promote not only your main page, but your deep pages as well.

       7. Don’t do reciprocal link exchange!

(I wrote this blog post back in June about link building; this is an excerpt from it.)

    Hope this helps.

  6. Anythong website and search engine related is not beyond any average person's ability to get a handle on.  It alll boils down to time and effort - if you have time and inclination then do it yourself.  I for one, have decided that I can't be bothered- a bit short on time and no inclination as any effort into that detracts me from my core missions.  The actual processes are easy out of a book stuff along with some creative input but when something doesn't quite work out then it can be really frustrating if it is not your usual turf and that is when pros come into their own as - rightfully so - they will have an intuition which non IT people have not earned.  So do it yourself and if you come unstuck then..call in the pros
