What is linux's equivalent to winzip and winrar?

See I just got this computer and the guy that gave it to me put linux ubuntu and I need a program like winzip and winrar to open cetain files. So if you can tell me what they are would be great. Thanx

  1. Run in terminal:

    sudo apt-get install unrar

    Then you will be able to Right Click>Extract winzip/winrar archieve files.

    I run 'sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras' after a fresh install of Ubuntu to install rar/zip support, flash, java, codecs and other proprietary c**p with a single command.

  3. 7zip is my favourite program for compressed files. It is available for windows and linux. You should be able to use the package manager to install it simply.

  4. winrar files are no good to you on Linux, they are all Windows files. There are several file compression programs, tar, gzip, ark and many more. Read the documentation.
