Linux is an open source operating system under GPL meaning anyone can modify and use it to fit their need for free, while Windows is a proprietary operating system owned by Microsoft and its not free and its not cheap.

Linux is an open source operating system that comes in about 40 flavours and is FREE

Windows is the operating system from Microsoft.com it comes in 8 flavours and they are all bloated and not free - Windows is a proprietary operating system which means that you have to pay a license fee to Microsoft to use it and unlike Linux you cannot make any changes to the kernel.
