in digital communication the digital signals had to be carried to the remote servers and computers using telephone lines or other wires that had no greater capabilities to carry these signals.  Hence they had to be converted into compatiable audio signals and sent through them.  Similarly the audio signals received had to be re-converted into digital signals.  this process is achieved using the Modulator and Demodulator circuits built-up in one unit called MODEM which does the proper conversion of digital signals to audio signals and vice cersa.

thus MODEM stands for MODULATOR-  DEMODULATOR.

MO - DEM means Modulator - Demodulator.

This name is derived from the function it performs. Digital signals cannot travel over long distances without getting degraded, hence they r converted into analog signals and sent through copper cables(telephone lines). The MODEM picks up these signals and converts them to digital signals.

It also converts digital signals back to analog signals when sending signals back to copper cables.
