  1. Marketing is often confused with the terms "advertising" and "promotion."  But in reality, marketing iis simply the process by which you decide what you will sell, to whom you will sell, where you will sell, when you will sell,  and how.

Think of marketing as the hub of the wheel, and the different terms (i.e. advertising, promotion, sales, public relations, market research, product development, and new business development) as the spokes that all lead from the hub and support the hub.

    Hope that helps!

  2. marketing is everything involved in developing new products, pricing, promoting (including advertising). some think it's just the promotion/advertising part but even more important is developing the right product in the first place, distributing it (choosing where to sell it) and pricing it right.

  3. they are right...although promoting an organisation may be more public relations than marketing.

the basic "marketing mix" is made up of 4 P's - product (good or service), price, promotion and place (distribution). basically, these elements are the foundation of how you develop (as mentioned) a product in a market.

the marketing department is kinda the messenger between the organisation (company) and the consumers so customer service/customer relationship management (CRM) is important to get feedbacks from consumers to improve the 4P's which will affect sales.

the department is also in charge of portraying the product into consumers' minds - creating needs and wants through means of advertising and promotion - with information gathered from market research about what consumers need and want (aka feedback).

in short, marketing = creating a win-win situation for the market (customers) and the organisation (company). example: customers get a reliable (promotion) vacuum cleaner (product) at an affordable price (price) from nearby store (distribution) and the sales generate profit for the company.

things that can be marketed are not limited to goods and services but include people (celebrity), ideas (patent), organisations (selling a business), causes (charity campaigns), etc.

am student with a major in marketing =P so sorry if i didnt explain well enough, am not a teacher...yet =D
