  1. Uniform Resource Locator

  2. Yes, the above mentioned answer explains URL correctly.

To read more about Uniform Resource Locator visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/URL

  3. THe thing you type in at the top of the Internet Browser

    (Web address)

For Example the Yahoo URL is: http://www.yahoo.co.uk/ Because thats what you type in to get to that page.

  4. URL means UNIFORM RESORCE LOCATOR

  5. Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs, aka URLs) are short strings that identify resources in the web: documents, images, downloadable files, services etc...

Abbreviation of Uniform Resource Locator, the global address of documents and other resources on the World Wide Web.

The first part of the address is called a protocol identifier and it indicates what protocol to use, and the second part is called a resource name and it specifies the IP address or the domain name where the resource is located. The protocol identifier and the resource name are separated by a colon and two forward slashes.

For example, the two URLs below point to two different files at the domain pcwebopedia.com. The first specifies an executable file that should be fetched using the FTP protocol; the second specifies a Web page that should be fetched using the HTTP protocol:

  6. Uniform Resource Locator is a compact string of characters used to represent a resource available on the Internet. In popular usage and many technical documents, it is a synonym for Uniform Resource Identifier (URI).

  7. All the other posters are right in the technical definition.  But I am going to show you what it looks like and explain what a URL is.

    Example of a sample URL:

    http://www.example.com

"http" means that we want to use the protocol Hyper Text Transfer Protocol.  It's the means by which we will transfer data.  Common other examples include https, and ftp.

"www" is actually just an older definition that is not required, you don't need www in a lot of cases.  It's depending on how the other end is setup.

"example.com" is the domain name.  This is the single handedly most important part of any URL.  Without that the computer doesn't have a clue on where to go.  With the example.com the computer can then go to the correct server that hosts the domain and get the information which you request.

    Sub-Domains:

    http://answers.yahoo.com

The same rules apply as above with the protocol, however you will notice that my "www" is now "answers".  This is because on the server which you are going to they can setup something called a sub-domain.  It's a means of having a shorter URL available to the client and it go to the same spot.  The "formal" URL for the sub-domain above is http://www.yahoo.com/answers/

    Hope this helps,

    Chad

  8. URL is like an address to a particular website etc. For example :  the URL for yahoo is www.yahoo.com. The URL for google is www.google.com.

It's like you have numbers on lockers to identify your locker, the same way you have URLs to track out a website.
