If the subject matter was an orange then you would first observe it using human senses and then run a series of test to determine that it is indeed an orange.  Based on the results of the controlled test, further testing my be utilized using devices that detect properties beyond the scope of human senses and perception.  Throughout all of these observations and test properties, tendencies and probabilities of and about the orange or 'subject matter' can be obtained.

      These principles can also be applied to literary works as an introduction to content to gear the reader for an educational experience in addition to the original text contained in the work itself.
