  1. It's the amount of energy needed to start a combustion reaction.  Fuels combust (oxidize) in the presence of oxygen, but there needs to be an initial amount of energy put in to make it start.  This usually comes in the form of radiant heat.  Think of a spark to light a fire.  Once the reaction starts, it becomes self-perpetuating and doesn't need any further input of energy (until it runs out of reactant or fuel).


  2. Minimum ignition energy is the minimum amount of energy that can ignite a combustible air/fuel mixture, normally powders such as coal dust or flour.
