What is meant by Matthew 1818?

Question

Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven."

What does this mean?

The physical realm and the spiritual realm are connected. What happens in one happens in the other.

Mat 18:18  

Whatsoever ye shall bind ... - See  Mat_16:19. These words were spoken to the apostles. Jesus had before addressed the same words to Peter, Mat_16:19. He employs them here to signify that they all had the same power; that in ordering the affairs of the church he did not intend to give Peter any supremacy or any exclusive right to regulate it. The meaning of this verse is, whatever you shall do in the discipline of the church shall be approved by God or bound in heaven. This promise, therefore, cannot be understood as extending to all Christians or ministers, for all others but the apostles may err.

This authority therefore passed with the Apostles.

It is the same as Mark 11: 23, 24, "speak to the mountain (prooblem or obstacle), and it shall obey you." Jesus spoke to the weather, cursed a fig tree, cast out demons, etc. He said we have the ability to do the same.

Binding refers to how sinner is bound to sin & its' consequences & cut of from Church life if he/ she continues to sin ..

Loosing occurs when a sinner repents & seeks forgiveness & is declared forgiven...that is ' loosed ' from the sin & its' consequences & restored to the family of God ...the Church !

I'm not sure, but I believe that catholics interpret this passage to mean that Jesus gives the priestly class the power to absolve sins and annul marriages.

I have heard this scripture used as weddings quite a bit in reference to binding into marriage. My application study bible says:

"This binding and loosing refers to the decisions of the church in conflicts. Among believers, there is no court of appeals beyond the church. Ideally, the church's decisions should be God-guided and based on discernment of his Word. Believers have the responsibility, therefore, to being their problems to the church, and the church has the responsibility to use God's guidance in seeking to resolve conflicts. Handling problems God's way will have an impact now and for eternity."
