  1. Simple.  Is it safe to fly.

The aircraft itself can be unsafe, because of the airframe (structure), engines, electronics, wiring, controls, hydraulics (used to power the control surfaces) and many other things.

These things are over and above any problems with the pilots, weather, air traffic control, or an unfriendly action.

So, when the pilot lands a plane and says, "I broke it", the aircraft is not airworthy, and someone has to fix something.  Then the inspector signs-off and declares the aircraft airworthy again.

  2. The official FAA references to airworthiness state that an aircraft (or engine, propeller, or appliance) is airwothy when it "conforms to type design and is in condition for safe operation".

Simply put, it means that the aircraft is made up of all the correct approved parts and that all those parts are in good condition and properly working. This is determined through confomity inspections and tests for brand new aircraft, or through proper maintenance and inspections for aircraft already in service.

  3. It is safe to fly and a certificate of return to service was written on the aircraft technical log book, signed and affixed A&P licensed as well.

This is usually the technical release every mechanic/engineer does to an airplane before he gives or turn-over the aircraft to the pilot before its first flight of the day.Accompanied by a "Service 1" checksheet also signed and license affixed.

  4. The aircraft is airworthy as long as:

-It is maintained in accordence with the manufacture (inspected every 100 hours, or anually, whichever comes first)

-There are no 'recalls' from the factory

-It was not in any major or minor accident

-It is kept within the limits of the Pilot Operating Handbook

-And there are no 'snags' (unforeseen maintainance problems, and must be rectified or deferred by an AME)
