I don't know.. it's a slang word.. people that are familiar with eachother greet eachother with the word, or sometimes it just spills out.

For instance, my brother will be doing something gross like mooning me, and I'll be like "Duuude, that's gross! Stop!". lol.

Dude used to be my favorite word. I still say it a lot.
