The basic pattern is 14 stitches that I must repeat 4 times with a cast needle of 65 stitches... (with edge stitches on either side)

How does this make sense? Here's the pattern I am trying to follow:

http://www.lanagrossa.com/service/mdm/08_2005/index.html

"cast on 65 sts using size 6 mm needles and P 1 return row, cont in basic patt: edge st, start at arrow A, rep patt g 4 times, end at arrow B, edge st. When work measures 9 cm or 3 1/2" inc for side shaping 1 st at each end on every 6th row 5 times. When work measures 25 cm or 9 7/8" from beginning bind off for armholes at each end on every alt row 3 sts once, 2 sts twice and 1 st 3 times. When work measures 39 cm or 15 3/8" from beginning bind off for neck the 25 center sts. At neck edge bind off on 2 sts once on 2nd foll row. When work measures 41 cm or 16 1/8" from beginning bind off rem 13 sts." SOOO CONFUUUUSED! Thank you :-)

  1. I took a look at the website and now I understand.  You're working the back.  The trick is that you're working only part of the graph, the section between A and B.

    Cast on your 65 sts.

Purl your one return row all the way across.

K 1 st, which is your selvedge stitch.

Now knit the 21 stitch pattern repeat between letters A and B three times.

Now knit the 1 st left on the needle, your other selvedge stitch.

Continue up the piece like that until you're ready for the shaping.

    Does this make it clearer?
