  1. organic substances are ones that contain carbon such as sugars, amino acids, nucleic acids. the inorganic substances would have been phosphorous, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen.  these elements combined are what make up all life on earth. life originated in the oceans because of extreme temperatures and lightning causing chemical reactions to occur creating life. supposedly

  2. They are talking about a theory of how life began. Its called the primordial soup.

Basically it says that the Earth started as inorganic substances like ammonia, water, etc. and organic substances like carbon. The substances mixed in the oceans of the early Earth and in the right conditions formed basic building blocks for like like amino acids and lipids. These substances over billions of years formed a primitive single celled organism.

Then evolution took over and it slowly evolved into the life we see today.
