What is mercuricome?

as a child I had cronic and severe tonsilitis. Mom used to swab my throat with mercuricome. Whai is the ingredient?

Its antiseptic qualities were discovered by Johns Hopkins doctor Hugh H. Young in 1919. The chemical soon became popular among parents and doctors for everyday antiseptic uses and it was very commonly used for minor injuries in the schoolyard. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) removed it from the "generally recognized as safe" and into the 'untested' classification to effectively halt its distribution in the United States in 1998 over fears of potential mercury poisoning. It is readily available in most other countries.

I think it's spelled Mercurochrome (the brand name) and is no longer sold in North America because it contained mercury. Its main ingredients were merbromien, sodium mercurescein, and several other branded ingredients: Antiseptichrome, Superchrome .... I'm sure Wiki will know all about it!

Red dye containing mercury in combination.Has antiseptic properties and is sometimes used for skin sterilization as 2 per cent solution in a mixture of acetone,alcohol and water.Don't know if it is still on the  market.
