A meteor is the visible event you see as a streak in the sky, typically at night, when a meteorite, often a speck of dust, smashes into the atmosphere at high speed.

An asteroid is an object in space.  It can become a meteorite by entering the atmosphere, which is an event called a meteor. The word asteroid means something that looks like a star, but isn't.

Meteorologists are people who study things, but not meteors.  They're involved with weather. Very confusing. Perhaps that's why the forecasts are so often wrong.
