What is metering in DLSR?

Please clarify as iam a beginner to DLSR.

  1. It refers to the ligth meter built into the camera which can set the camera to automatically adjust the exposure for the amoun tof light present.

    Advanced users will use it to help them set the exposure in semi-autoamtic or manual modes.    


  2. One: it's DSLR.  Digital Single Lens Reflex.

    In short, metering tries to get the exposure right.  If you're working in aperture priority at 100 ISO and choose f/8.0 and it's a sunny day, the camera will meter this situation and choose a shutter speed of 1/1000 of a second to get the exposure right.  Likewise, if you're working in shutter priority and choose 1/4000 of a second, the camera will set the aperture to something like f/4.0.  Of course, if you've adjusted your exposure to be higher or lower, it'll try to meter to get the exposure right for what you told it the exposure should be.
