  1. wats ITF. so i'd say WTF

  2. “Street” to me means; 3am, 18 angry guys with machine guns and you haven’t slept or eaten for 3 days. What’s effective now?

I’ve said before; you’ll have to define your martial goals. The very process of defining what you want from martial art will lead you to the art and instructor you want to learn from. Jumping in thinking ‘I want to do TKD’ (or Kung Fu, Karate, Kickboxing or anything else) is not very beneficial later when you realize your unclear expectations aren’t being met by the art you just spent a year or more on. Think about what you want; do you want to be able to move effortlessly between multiple attackers? Do you want to be like the old man in those Kung Fu movies who disables bullies with a finger lock? Or do you want to finally spring a big surprise on a mugger and break his arms? Meet with instructors and talk about what your expectations are. They almost always will be willing to speak with you about the art they’ve dedicated years of their life to preserving.

  3. ITF and WTF are not so different that one has a distinct advantage over the other.

WTF is not "mostly sport" as many people say.  The WTF is the governing body of Tae Kwon Do recognized by the South Korean government and the International Olympic Committee.

The forms they learn are different, the sparring rules are slightly different, but the techniques are not that different.

I have done both.  Both are effective.  Ultimately, fights are won by individuals, not by styles.

  4. ITF and WTF both are good for selfdefence.

  5. I've never practiced WTF taekwondo, so I can't really tell you much about it. All I know is that it's primarily a sport, and focusses mainly on kicks, rather than hand techniques, because they score more points in a sparring competition. The sparring is full contact though, and you'll need a lot of protective gear.

ITF taekwondo is a more effective martial art , in my opinion. It's a good form of self defence, as in class, we have a well rounded curriculum including kicks, hand techniques and joint locks and throws. You'll also learn patterns, which you'll be expected to perform at gradings, along with breaking (from green belt level) and sparring. Sparring is light contact.

I suspect by "on the street" you mean self defence, and you won't start getting yourself into fights, right?

Do some research and see what martial arts classes are  near your area. Go and try them out and see which you like best. If you're set on doing taekwondo though, do a little more research and learn more about both styles. Wikipedia has pretty good information on them. You could also search youtube for videos of ITF sparring competitions and WTF sparring competitions and see which you like the look of best.

Here's a good ITF sparring video:

If you want, you could even just go and try a WTF class and an ITF class and see what you prefer. Good luck!
