What is more important, your child or your country?

Obama's plan of implementing mandatory community service for all youth, including college students makes me wonder.

If your 16 year old daughter (through the government roll of the dice) had to perform 50 hours of service in the most dangerous, gang infested, drug infested part of town, would you drive her there, drop her off and leave her in that situation for the good of your country?

Just goes to show how much flag-waving republicans really care about this country. Kathy has obviously done no community service what so ever. Lemme guess Kathy, you think that since someone gets paid to collect all the carts in the in the parking lot in the grocery store, that you shouldn't have to take it to the cart coral. Thank you for making my groceries cost more.

I on the other hand, I have so I actually know what the h**l I am talking about. I was in Boy Scouts for over fifteen years and did hundreds of hours of community service, not once was I ever in any danger. Why not? Because many of the parents were also actively involved. If you are concerned get involved, don't just complain about it.

It is people like me who do things for people like you because people like you won't do it for themselves. Like serving OUR country. Is this community service? I think so. Are you going to start complaining that being in the military is to dangerous for your child and they will not be joining until they make it safer? I wouldn't be surprised.

Forcing high school students, not everyone for those who were unaware of this, is hardly a bad idea. I actually think that anyone who doesn't go to college right out of high school should have to join the military, but that is because I think most 18 year old's are badly in need of a reality check. I just think it is a good idea because I have experienced the benefits first hand, not because I think it would actually happen.

Every community has high school students. Why would they go to ANOTHER community to do community service?

The democrats seem to lean toward more government controls, which leads to loss of personal freedoms.  Liberalism leads to socialism which is a step away from having a fascist government.

Strong government controls over every facet of your life, over the press and media.  

We're almost there.  The children are being taught in school to accept this and the media is already on board.  Obama will take us the rest of the way.

The answer to your last sentence is No, there are other ways of helping the country that are less hazardous.

For me child is more important. If you have to risk something for the good of the country, do it yourself without harming your family.

If I had children, I would say my child.  However, the scenario you mentioned would not happen.  If Obama does implement such a plan, he will probably copy similar plans used by European nations.  Therefore, youth would not be expected to fulfill their service commitments until after they graduate high schoool, and even then, they will have a choice of how they want to fulfill that commitment.  No 16-year-olds will be forced to work in the most dangerous neighborhoods.

Better public service to America than military service fighting for nothing in Iraq.

But even though I'm an Obama supporter, I don't like this policy.  I don't think it would pass constitutional muster if challenged in court.  I don't see anything in the Constitution giving the federal government the power to conscript civilians as corvée labor.
