  1. Root canal, IF DONE PROPERLY, really does not hurt at all since you are removing all the nerve endings.  The gums surrounding the tooth might be a little sore, but that goes away within a day or two.  You only have to heal the small root canal surface area.  You probably be fully recovered with 1-2 weeks of a root canal.  After the root canal, you usually go back for a crown.

Tooth extractions, especially wisdom tooth, are painful.  Not only are you removing the all the nerve endings, but you are removing the entire tooth as well.  The gums are left with a bigger void that takes much longer to heal because it is a larger surface area.  However, the risk for complications is smaller for a tooth extraction than a root canal.

Think of it this way, this time next year, you should not even be thinking about this tooth extraction.

  2. Root canal usually takes several treatments. The tooth usually one pull and its gone.

  3. I've had teeth pulled before and it doesn't really hurt at all. I even had one tooth pulled that was ankylost (sp on that one?) meaning it was fused to the bone. So they had to break it off my jaw. Without any anesthetics (again, sp?) it would be painful, but with novacaine or laughing gas, the process is more uncomfortable than painful.

    hope this helps!
