how is one supossed to know

or

how are you supossed to know

one should know better than that

or

you should know better than that

one would not know the answer off the top of your head

  1. Well, the first statement in each of the above would be much less "accusatory."  Whenever one uses "you" and then says something negative, that never goes over very well with anyone, and certainly doesn't belong in the work place.  Hope that helps.


  2. depends if you are telling a person they should know better, then use 'you', but if you are speaking with someone about some else who should know better, you could use 'one' or you could use 'hey'... just speak clearly and simply, making your points in conversation easy to understand rather than trying to sound sophisticated. you'll probably just end up sounding less sophisticated... lol

    one would not know the answer of the top of his/her head.

  3. When generalising it is more proper (but somewhat pretentious) to use "one".

    - How is one supposed to know?

    - One should know better than that.

    - One would not know the answer off the top of ONES head.

    Whether or not it is appropriate to use "one" depends on the context and register.
