  1. Music theory is the range of principles that have been created to define musical sound over the centuries, including the skills to read and write music in the western musical scales. Understanding music theory allows you to describe the rhythm and melody of a musical piece.

It is possible to teach yourself music theory, up to a point, but you can never be certain about the accuracy of your progress without the input of musicians who possess these skills.

  2. Music theory is the field of study that deals with the mechanics of music and how music works. It involves identifying patterns that govern composers' techniques. In a more general sense, music theory also often distills and analyzes the elements of music – rhythm, harmony (harmonic function), melody, structure, form, and texture. Broadly, theory may include any statement, belief, or conception of or about music (Boretz, 1995). People who study these properties are known as music theorists.  The length of time involved in growing into this field depends upon how committed one is to the process, and how talented or gifted one might be.  I believe there are people who are born with the gift of understanding music to this degree and the process is not lengthy for them. For others, it might take years and years of study.  I do believe that you need an outside force to compliment your progress.  This is not something that you can do on your own and regulate or assess your ability. Someone with a greater sense of knowledge must be able to do that.

  5. It's the theory of how notes can be put together to give melody and harmony with rhythm.

Yes, you can teach yourself - loads of bookshops will have suitable books: look at the Associated Board books - but to really make progress it would be better to get a music teacher to teach you. They will be able to work with you on feeling the music rather than just reading about it.
