Question:

What is my BT number?

I've just moved in to a new flat and having troubles finding out what the BT line number is.

I called them and an asian fella with a very asian name Johnatan explained that they couldn't tell me the number unless I'd sign up for a 12 months contract which I ve got no intentions to do as I want my broadband and phne from PlusNet.

Here are the questions:

1) HOW DO I GET TO KNOW THE NUMBER?

2) IF I GET THE NUMBER, DO I NEED TO BOTHER WITH BT AT ALL IF I WANT TO SIGN UP WITH ANOTHER PROVIDER (who btw offers his broadband+phone calls with line rental included)

Thank you v much

  1. try ringing someone you know and get them to do 1471. you dont need to know unless your planning on connecting with them. i have phone line broadband and tv with virgin for £30 a month and that includes the line and unlimited calls to uk numbers.

  2. Ring your mobile phone- the number should be displayed.

  3. if there is no active line you need to call plusnet and ask them to arrange for a line to be fitted (i know theres one in place but it isnt actually a live working line you should just be able to make 999 and 150 calls) they will then task out openreach to install and ensure the line works fine and then this will be connected on plusnet.

this will still possibly cost you about £125 as in most cases new developments arent fully connected and they need to recoup the cost of installing the line plant some way. this is the same regardless of if its bt, plusnet, talktalk etc as all are dependant on the openreach cables and equipment back to the BT exchange where they are all housed (yes BT has to host the over companies equipment in their buildings) where its then split off.so its not just a case of getting number but its a case of making sure the line is connected and working properly.

  4. Phone a friend and get them to do 1471 and the other provider should be able to tell you it anyway once they have connected to your telephone line.

  5. That is the problem with BT, if you have moved into premises where the line has been discontinued you can only get BT to re-establish the line and you are stuck with the minimum contract, plus you will get a reconnection charge.

You can buy your way out of the contract but that is very expensive.

  6. try dialling 17070, this tells you what number the line is, it should work but mit not. if you get the number then tell your new service provider the number and they should be able to sort it from there

  7. have you tried looking your address up in the BT online phone book?
