What is my cat doing?

Well when my cat is "happy" he does this chewing kinda lip smaking thing and its kinda creepy but i just want to know what he is doing if its normal or if hes just creepy? Can someone give me a little insight into this?

Is it a noise made by smacking the lips or is it a noise he's making?

My one cat will make this noise that sounds sort-of like a "marf" type of thing, like he just ate something really tasty and wants to smack his lips and talk about it at the same time.  As far as I can tell, he makes the noise because he's happy and curious about something at the same time.  

My cat seems fairly normal and he's the third cat I've owned that makes that noise, so if this is the same one your cat makes, it's not that uncommon.
