Question:

What is my nationality???

I was born in Syria (a country in the middle east), however my parents are palestinian refugees (since 1948).

The Visa I've got from the American embassy says that my nationality is "x*x", and I have a paper from my school in the US which says that I'm from "West Bank". The Syrians do not consider me as a Syrian neither do the palestinians and the Israelis. So I was wondering... Legally what is my nationality?

Can anyone help?

  1. Sorry guys, but you're all off the mark.  If the country of birth or ethnic origin will not recognize a person, much less issue a passport, the term used is STATELESS.

That is what the "x*x" signifies.  It would otherwise be a three-letter code for citizenship or nationality.

  2. What country are you a citizen of legally? That should be your answer.

If you took citizenship in US, you are an american of Syrian decent. AND...what do you consider yourself as? Some have that problem and it all starts with them.

  3. Your nationality would be Syrian, the place of your birth.

  4. Citizenship and nationality can be determined by jus soli (birthplace) or jus sanguinis (parentage). If you never took Syrian citizenship by virtue of birthplace, then I would guess you're Palestinian like your parents. If your school papers say you're from the West Bank, that means for nationality purposes the US considers you Palestinian too.

  5. Palestinian

  6. If you have a visa from the American embassy, my first suggestion would be to look at the document which contains the US visa - it will provide the answer.  I am guessing it is in a Palestinian Refugee Travel Document issued by the Syrian government.  Legally, your nationality is Palestinian, but because of your situation, you do not qualify for a travel document issued by the Palestinian Authority.

  7. Syria
