If it is a first cousin, you are first cousin once removed.

If is is a second cousin, you are second cousin once removed.

You may see a pattern here.

When you have children, your children and the children of your first cousins will be second cousins.

When those second cousins have children, they will be third cousins.

When your "Nth" cousin's child has a child, you will be "Nth" cousin twice removed.

When cousins have children you add a degree for their relation - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

When cousins have children, grandchildren, etc, you add a removed for their relation to yourself.

Going the other way, your parents' cousins are yours once removed. (Any of their cousins - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 12th . . .)

Your grand parents' cousins are yours twce removed, and so on.

I know people who are President John Adams' first cousins - seven times removed.
